"You're so money and you don't even know it." ~ Sue

Swingers-1996 Vince Vaughn (Trent) and Jon Favreau (Mike) are something else.  Along with their motley crew, they prowl the streets of LA going to some of the city's most iconic watering holes. I'm not sure as a woman I am supposed to like this movie let alone love it but I do!  Perhaps it the character (Mikey) a transplant to Los Angeles  to whom I can relate.  Moving from another city to LA can be serious culture shock :)
The way this film was written and shot, the characters always squished together in booths, dressed more like 1946 than 1996 really sets is apart from other films.  The guys have some really strange idea's about woman, yet somehow these guys are soooooooo cool.  I don't even think they know they are cool.  Instead of trying to match a dress this week, lets see if we can match the mood created by the movie :)

The Test Of Time

Furniture styles come and go.

Much like hemlines, things fall out of favor and at some later date are rediscovered usually with a slight twist on the original style.

Then there are some things that stand the test of time and we see them each season with a fond glance into our past.  A gentle reminder that the future of the outdoor living is growing in leaps and bounds!

 Willy Ghul "Der Strandstuhl" ~1954

Mr. Guhl's trademark rocking chair was made of a single piece of Eternit bent into a loop.

It was designed according to his motto of "achieving the most with the minimum of effort."

The chairs are made out of Eternit, once composed of ninety percent concrete and ten percent asbestos. Today it is created using ninety percent concrete and 10 percent cellulose fibers. The composition of the Der Strandstuhl caused some controversy at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MOMA) during an exhibit of the chair.  It was removed after two weeks on display over concerns of asbestos.

The chair is available at the Eternit design shop.  The formula for the material ( Eternit ) has been modified and now contains no asbestos.  Instead they are using concrete and a cellulose mixture for strength and pliability

Etsy - Finds

I love Etsy!  I can and do spend hours and hours on their site looking for items and my home is decorated with more than a few finds.  The amount of talented craftspeople is simply amazing!

I was blown away by these absolutely gorgeous recycled glass chimes from  Metamorphosi.  Each piece of glass has been recycled with a detailed description of what the item was before.  Many even have the detailed history of where they were found prior to being turned into these beautiful chimes.

The Woods Above The Clouds

Sea Shore

Dedicated to the use of recycled material, Metamorphosi also promotes the idea of creating art using recycled materials  As well, they are actively doing projects with schools and and public/private organizations.

Ilaria Sadun humbles me with her body of work and the various ways she gives back to the community at large.

All these items are hand crafted at the studio located in Calcata, Italy. Please check their website as they offer so many wonderful objects.

Outdoor Sculpture - For Birds and other Living Things

Joe Papendick creates functional art.

Not only are his pieces beautiful, they are helping to feed the little flying creatures that may inhabit your area.

All Joe's creations are hand crafted using selected materials including, copper, steel and in some cases bronze and brass.

Joe's work was featured on HDTV.  (I want that!)  The latest offering is the Build Series -crafted out of pieces that are cut off other designs.  Brilliant!

This collection is meant to be placed in the soil with a height of seven feet prior to planting.  Once placed in your garden or yard, the end result will be about six and one half feet. Of course adjustments can be made.

Just gorgeous is the patina on this piece!  The copper looks amazing!

Different climates will produce different reactions in the metal ensuring your sculpture is always unique :)

The Seven Year Itch

"""   We are all of us stars, and we deserve to twinkle."
 ~Marilyn Monroe

Marylin Monroe, standing over the subway grate in The Seven Year Itch, is clearly one of the most famous scenes in cinematic history.  Let's see what I can pull together this week to merge that iconic scene with furniture and accessories for an outdoor living space!

The Breezer and the Paddo parasols are both created by Sywawa.  I can see the flow and movement of the dress being lifted up by the air in the subway grate as they flow in a breeze.

The Tulip umbrella by Shademakers looks upside down but when it goes up it casts a fabulous shade.  Much like "The Girls" skirt flies up standing over the subway grate

Ron Arad Ripple chair For Moroso The frame of Ripple Chair is made of white polished and natural injection-molded thermoplastic.  This frame is perfect for the flowing dress created by William Travilla - the man who designed and dressed Marilyn Monroe for some of her most famous roles.

I found these chairs and was delighted!  They have the look I was hoping to achieve.  Domenico De Palo has covered the aluminum structures of the Havana chair with a removable fabric called Cordura®.  Thankfully, it can be  washed! See these chairs at Vital Furniture

Designer Patrica Urquiola's Frilly chair for Kartell  and Marcello Ziliani Azhar chairs and Atalas table for Caprini are fabulous examples of the look I would like to achieve.

Accessories and lighting :
Gandi Blasco  rugs looks similar to pearls.  Lots and lots, of pearls!  Below that is a cool rug from Overstocked.com.  When I saw it, it reminded me of a subway grate with style.

The Moon Jelly is a stunning lighting fixture that would be perfect in a cabana or well sheltered pergola.  The Soji hanging lamp is solar powered and it does have the appearance of it's close cousin Le Klint without the cords.  :)

I think we did a great job finding furniture and accessories that would compliment the dress from the Seven Year Itch.  I want to make this blog a weekly feature.

If you have a favorite movie, let me know and I will do my very best to pull together a look!

Jane :)
