The Test Of Time

Furniture styles come and go.

Much like hemlines, things fall out of favor and at some later date are rediscovered usually with a slight twist on the original style.

Then there are some things that stand the test of time and we see them each season with a fond glance into our past.  A gentle reminder that the future of the outdoor living is growing in leaps and bounds!

 Willy Ghul "Der Strandstuhl" ~1954

Mr. Guhl's trademark rocking chair was made of a single piece of Eternit bent into a loop.

It was designed according to his motto of "achieving the most with the minimum of effort."

The chairs are made out of Eternit, once composed of ninety percent concrete and ten percent asbestos. Today it is created using ninety percent concrete and 10 percent cellulose fibers. The composition of the Der Strandstuhl caused some controversy at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MOMA) during an exhibit of the chair.  It was removed after two weeks on display over concerns of asbestos.

The chair is available at the Eternit design shop.  The formula for the material ( Eternit ) has been modified and now contains no asbestos.  Instead they are using concrete and a cellulose mixture for strength and pliability
